As a Company Director living a very busy and stressful lifestyle coupled with a few medical problems, Reflexology has hugely benefitted me personally and I have an enhanced general feeling of well being since my visits. MVE

I have been seeing Kathryn for about 5 years for help with pain in my knees. After several treatments and advice on diet and lifestyle changes I noticed a difference and found that I did not need to take so many pain killers. I also feel so much more relaxed and calm which helps me to cope with my health problems better and also my ongoing skin problems have started to clear up. JB

I have been going to see Kate for Reflexology for just over a year now. When I first started going I didn’t know what to expect but Kate explained everything she did and asked me various questions to see what I was looking to get from the sessions.

My reason for going is for relaxation purposes. I go about every 8 weeks but wish my personal circumstances enable me to go more often!

Kate is very professional, with appointment booking, a lovely clean and cosy treatment room. She charts her findings and discusses them with me at the end of the session. My feet feel fantastic at the end of the session and I certainly feel relaxed.
I enjoy chatting to Kate about natural remedies and find her knowledge really interesting.
I would thoroughly recommend her, once you start going you won’t want to stop! KJ

I have had ongoing heath problems for many years and over those years I have found that Reflexology has a very relaxing and calming effect on me that has helped me tremendously in dealing with my health problems. I have recently had to undergo major surgery and, again, I have found that Kathryn’s help, advice and continued support invaluable in helping me to get back on my feet and be able to move on with my life. Reflexology has become a very important part of my life and will continue to be so. KE

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a Complementary Therapy that involves the massage of specific zones, Reflexologyusually of the feet, that are believed to correspond to areas or organs of the body. Reflexology is a simple, non-invasive therapy which may help to maintain the delicate balance within the bodies systems and structures. By using specific massage techniques a feeling of well being may be initiated and accelerated. Reflexology uses a holistic approach to health care that uses a combination of one or more principles.

A Reflexologist works holistically and aims to work alongside allopathic healthcare encouraging their patients to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

Reflexology should not be used as an alternative to seeking medical advice.

History of Reflexology

Archaeological evidence suggests that foot observation and applying pressure to hands and feet are Reflexology Historyancient traditions depicted in Egyptian pictographs dating from 2330 BC, reported in various texts from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM, starting from 3000BC) and also practiced by North American Indians.

The concept of reflexology as a therapy began to emerge in the 19th century, based on Western scientific research into the nervous system. The belief was that pressure applied on one part of the body influenced another part of the body, creating a sense of well being; prompting the hypothesis that mood can be affected in response to certain stimuli. This became known as "reflex therapy".

An American, Dr William Fitzgerald, after a visiting England in the 1900s, launched the idea of Zone therapy which divides the body into ten longitudinal zones running from the top of the head down to the feet (five zones per foot). Reflexology was fully developed in the 1930s under the influence of Eunice Ingham, who devised charts of reflex zones for the hands and feet. Her work is continued today by her nephew, Dwight Byers.

With our ever increasing busy life styles it is important that people take more responsibility for their own health needs so many people use reflexology as a way of relaxing the mind and body.

Reflexology may help to relax, improve mood, aid sleep, help relieve tension and improves a sense of well being. It is a gentle therapy that aims to encourage the body to work naturally to restore its own balance.

Reflexology may be beneficial for a wide range of conditions including,

  • Stress related issues
  • Aid sleep
  • Every day stress and anxiety
  • Help aid relaxation
  • Promote and fostering peace of mind
  • Improving ability to monitor stress signals and respond appropriately
  • Enhancing capacity for calm thinking and creativity
  • Encouraging a feeling of well being
  • Increasing awareness of mind-body connection
  • Restoring energy flow

A Reflexologist does not claim to cure and do not diagnose or prescribe.

On your first visit there will be a consultation discussing the individual’s medical history as well as their needs and expectations. Clients are required to give their written consent for a session and minors are required to have consent from a legal guardian. The Reflexologist then begins to work on your feet, or hands if necessary, noting problem areas. There may be discomfort in some places, but it is fleeting, and is an indication of congestion or imbalance in a corresponding part of the body. For the most part, the sensation is pleasant and soothing.

Usually a therapy session lasts between 30 minutes to 1 hour. After the first session or two your body may respond in a very definite way: you may have a feeling of well-being and relaxation; some individuals may even feel rejuvenated depending on what the body needs. It is, however, vital information for a Reflexologist, as it shows how your body is responding to treatment.

The number of sessions will vary from person to person. If the aim is simply relaxation, then one session is wonderful - maybe topping up once a month to maintain the benefits! In most cases, a series of (6 or so) sessions may be necessary to resolve any problems. Some clients book a regular weekly or monthly session as a preventative measure, to keep their systems balanced and in good working order. Typically, a client may choose to visit weekly until a consistent improvement is recorded. This can then progress to fortnightly and then monthly visits.

Indeed reflexology can benefit almost everyone. An increasing number of people are using this safe, natural therapy as a way of relaxing, balancing and harmonising the body.
